Writing had always been one of Mary's hobbies and after the war it became a way for her to process what she had lived through. And one of the poems she wrote after the war won the the Dylan Thomas Memorial Award.

During the war Mary had often written back to her family in London. When she arrived back home, her mother gave her all the letters she had saved and told her she should write a book about her experiences working in the Land Army.

In 1947 Mary finished her book 'Odd Chapter: Diary of a Land Girl'. It is now in the Imperial War Museum in London.
